Your wheel bearings are something you may have never given any thought while driving. Wheel bearings enable your wheels to spin freely and must be rugged, because they bear the entire weight of the vehicle. Wheel bearings can last well over 100,000 miles, but do wear out and must eventually be replaced.
Many vehicles these days have wheel bearing assemblies that cannot be serviced, so when these bearings decay we simply replace the entire wheel bearing assembly. For those vehicles with accessible wheel bearings in good condition, we may do some preventive maintenance service. Your owner's manual or service advisor can tell you if your wheel bearings can be serviced or if we need to simply replace the assembly.
When wheel bearings wear out, they generate excessive heat, which can lock up the wheel when driving at any speed. In some cases, a wheel can even fall off. Either scenario could cause a serious accident. A worn bearing might cause a groaning sound from your wheels, which may fade at some speeds and return at other speeds. Ask us to inspect your wheel bearings when you come in.
